History and Background
Uttarachal was earlier a part of Uttar Pradesh , today it is one of the new States of India. This New State came into being with the seperation of the hilly regions of Kumaon and Garhwal from Uttar Pradesh . According to the Hindu mythology these two regions are also known as Devbhoomi. In spite of being part of one State , Both Kumaon and Garhwal are absolutely distinct from each other in their ethnicity, culture and history. According to the historians the Garhwal region had been the center of civilization since the earlier times of history.
Stone Age evidences have proved that humankind was present in Kumaon Region since ancient times. Lakhu Udyar rock shelter is one of the famous tourist sites of the region. This region was a part of the Katyuri dynasty from the seventh to the eleventh century.
